The best gaming laptop for a Gamer on a Budget?

I often get ask, “what is the best gaming laptop for a gamer on a budget?” Thinking about it my best answer depends on what you mean by a budget. What I have seen some people do is to buy the best dell and max it out with as much RAM as they can, put an Alien ware sticker on it and start gaming.

Toshiba Qosmio X775

If you want a 17 inch screen try the Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop, you may be on a budget but this is not a compromise.

This laptop has what all of us who max out our laptops with graphics love to see, a powerful Intel Core i5 processor and a built for graphics-intensive apps NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M processor. The second-generation Intel Core i5 dual-core processor known as “Sandy Bridge”, is a breakthrough in digital media management, content creation, and 3D gaming capabilities. If you want to do video processing or other work that requires computer power and then be able to jump into a 3D game then this is the laptop for you.

There are laptops that come with powerful graphics cards, powerful processors and back lit key boards and colorful cases with fancy stickers on them. This is great, but there a lot of times when I need to take my laptop and have it look like it is only for business. When business is over I need a great gaming computer. When I get a new computer I take my old one, max out the RAM, put some gaming stickers on it and give it to my nephew. He loves them because my old business computers are faster than his gaming computers and he knows they can handle any games he has. So, put a sticker on it and call it a gaming computer.

Or you might check out the Alienware AM11X.

Alienware AM11x

If you want something portable and a 14 inch screen size is not too small then the Dell Inspiron 14Zs are a good buy. Keep in mind it is 14 inches of High Definition, LED-backlit display at 1366 x 768 resolution that looks like greatness. I do not recommend buying it for 3D games, there are better laptops for 3D. It comes with a great processor, the Intel Core i3-2330M Processor Dual-Core at 2.2GHz with a 3MB Cache was built for processing graphics. All this and at a great price.

Toshiba Qosmio Reviews

The Qosmio laptops were deigned for gamers, and those who need to process high graphic content.

Jenny asks…

Are Toshiba Qosmio good laptops?

This will be my first laptop and i want one thats good for work, games and its fast but most important reliable. I read reviews and they have recommended me Toshiba Qosmio, they said it doesn’ crash as much as other brands. IS it true and do they last for years like other brands?
what do you mean you can play them for a year or so? Like they’l get out dated or the graphics card get worned down due to max settings?

Ryland answers:

It is a good brand. But rarley does a computer crash jut for any reason. It is normaly phycal abuse of the computer or a virus. You need to get a good virus protection. ( do not use norton it slows a computer, use avg ) As for gaming you want to get a game specificaly for gaming wich can get expensive. Most laptops are not built for being fast and loded up with games. I recommend the dell xp. As for work all you will need is microsoft xp and an email account, wich will not slow your computer.

Donna asks…

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q887 Vs ASUS Republic of Gamers G51JX-A1 Vs Acer Aspire AS8943G-6190?

So I have been searching and searching the market for about 3 weeks now for a decent laptop with a decent price. I’ve finally reached a conclusion of 3 laptops. But since I’ll be paying 1500$ for a laptop I’m expecting it to work great with no bug/software/hardware issues. I know I’m being a bit naive there but c’mon, I’d deserve that spending all that money!!!
Now why don’t we put these 3 laptops head to head and let the competition begin.

When it comes to the processor the Acer and the Asus share common grounds with the i7 720QM but the Qosmio advances a bit there with the i7 740QM.

But with the rams on the other hand the Qosmio and Acer share the same 4GB while the Asus advances with 6GB

Well I guess all those comparisons won’t really make a difference in speed and power, so here comes the real comparisons:

Display: The Asus has a 15.6′ (1920×1080) Full HD LED display and so does the Acer but on a 18.4′ screen. However the Qosmio has a 18.4′ (1680×945) Full HD LCD display which is a real bummer especially because its weird resolution. But I guess the 18.4′s would be much better for watching movies and playing games.

Hard Drive: The 3 laptops have a 500GB Hard Drive at 7,200 RPM except the Acer which is only at 5,400RPM. I really see that as a deal-breaker for Acer since it would really slow me down alot!! I wonder if I could customize it and get a 7200 one??

GPU: And this really is a huge factor for me since I’m an extreme gamer plus I work with graphics. The Asus and the Qosmio share the Geforce 360 GTS which is a pretty decent graphics card but the Acer advances a bit with the Radeon HD 5850.

Both the Qosmio and the Acer have Blue-ray but the Asus doesn’t but that really isn’t big issue for me.

When it comes to the media buttons both the Acer and Qosmio have them, but I’ve read alot of reviews saying that the Qosmio buttons on the left can get in the way and it’s pretty annoying since it minimizes the screen. Its a flaw for the Asus not to have any.

So for the weight issue I really don’t see that as a problem but it also wouldn’t be bad to carry around a smaller laptop.

Now for the Major issues for each laptop, which I had to get from about 15 different review sites.
The Qosmio runs really hot and alot of people complain about the cooling error message where they would have to return it back to the manufacturer and replace the CPU, GPU or both.

The Acer has its Wi-Fi problems where almost every review told said that the Wi-Fi would disconnect every 10 minutes and thats just unacceptable.

Though for the Asus they reviews say that it also runs hot but its major issue is for the extremely low sound it offers.

I could go on and on about all their specs and all their pros and cons, but I think you all got the big picture now.

In desperate need of help!! I really can’t make my mind on any of these. I would really appreciate any advise or help. Thanks in advance.

just bought a toshiba qosmio x305q307 laptop for gaming.anybody else have one or a review?

It should be a mobile gamer’s delight. Just expect short battery life when gaming.

Daniel asks…

Gateway P series (FX) Laptop VS. Toshiba x205 and Toshiba qosmio.?

I’m looking for a good gaming laptop. My friends have Toshiba‘s out the ying yang. And I really love Toshiba. But I just stumbled across the Gateway P series. I’m looking for a good mobile gaming Toppy. But I can’t choose. I’ve reviewed alot on youtube and Gateway can handle Crysis on High very well, but I’ve heard some distinct rumors that it over heats. Hmmm. And as for the Toshiba x205, I’ve had my eye on that little booger for a while. So it comes down to Gateway P series (FX) Quad cor

Ryland answers:

I would totally go fro the gateway. My friend has that laptop and he is very happy with it. I have used it myself and its very good. Its the best looking laptop out of all of them and its not crazy thick. It has the better graphics and will take up less battery. And honestly, when i play games on my laptop, do you really care that everything is maxed out? I dont thats what a desktop is for. :D

Totally go with the gateway, toshiba needs to jump off a bridge.

Lisa asks…

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q887 Laptop computer – gaming performance?

I’m thinking of buying a laptop and the only taxing operation I would place on it would be high quality gaming. I have been looking at high performance laptops and the Toshiba Qosimo series caught my eye due to its sleek design, size, and numerous high quality specification options. I have seen many reviews overwhelmingly positive and some calling it a very capable gaming computer while others called it a “midrange gaming laptop”. Could the X505-Q887 version , run specifically games Starcraft 2, Modern Warfare 2 and Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion on the absolute highest settings? Or other games of the like?
Or if anyone has had experience with this Toshiba laptop what kind of games can not only be run but put on the highest settings through this computer? And what kind of problems are there if any? Any opinions on the computer are welcome, thanks

Ryland answers:

It is a good laptop to buy for gaming purpose. It has 4GB of inbuilt RAM which is quite enough and it has a NVidia GeForce GTS 360M processor to support games. The NVidia GeForce GTS 360M comes under class 1 of NVidia gaming processors.

Mark asks…

ASUS G73JH-A1 or Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q890?

Which is better? Pros and Cons?

I’ve been reading a few reviews and I’ve found out the Asus has the better Graphics card and it’s really powerful. But I’m a nit picky guy in buying these things and I dislike the fact that it lacks small things like firewire and an express card slot. It’s more powerful alright but the Toshiba is more “complete” if I may say, making it more versatile. But I’m still undecided. Please give opinions. Thanks!

Oh and correct me if I’m wrong but the Asus has 2 500GB hard drives? 1 TB?
Actually, both have the same max capacity of RAM, which is 8GB.

Ryland answers:

I would pick Asus G73JH-A1
-Better look and design in my opinion
-Better graphics / dx11 – like you said
-More ram
-Asus brand

Things to consider
-Keyboard differences
-do you really need esata/firewire?

About Toshiba Qosmio X775

Charles asks…

is the toshiba qosmio x775 a good laptop?

i decided to buy the Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 laptop but i have a few questions:
is the keyboard good for gaming? does it have a good anti ghosting?
is the build quality good?
does it have a back lit keyboard?
is the laptop better then the alienware m17x?
and most important: should i buy it?

Ryland answers:

The Qosmio has been groomed over years to fit into a high end gaming device and should be a good choice.

Alternatively the Dell XPS 14z  i14z-2026DBK is a small 14-Inch Laptop at a great price.

Michael asks…

Is the Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 17.3-Inch really good Gaming Laptop?

I have saved up for a pretty pricey computer. I am however, not a computer expert, so I would like you all to tell me if this is an all around amazing laptop. A friend of mine who buys a new laptop for gaming every other year says he loves the Toshiba Qosmio X775  series. Another friend says he does not like how any of the Qosmios look or feel.

I am looking for a great gaming and multimedia experience. I have looked at the Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 Gaming Laptop and I like it so far, the 17 in screen is a dream. I just need some advice  about if this is a good laptop.

I respect your opinion about Macs, but I’m sorry, I think they are really overrated :/
You pay about 2,000 dollars for a laptop, and although it works a long time, you won’t use half of the programs it contains unless you are a graphic designer or you use it for business.

The macs also don’t have magnificent sound either in my opinion.
I hear the fuss over macs all the time. and although I’m an ipod touch lover (it’s my baby!) I don’t care much for Macs. If Macs had a different name than Apple, they wouldn’t be nearly as popular…

Really comforting to know about your Toshiba! Glad to hear it is still running smoothly. I’m a girl, but I love video games, however I like to stick to Xbox or Playstation rather than computer gaming. But I know gaming laptops are almost always equipped with great graphics, sound, and memory for the purpose of gaming.

I have heard a lot of people say the Toshiba Qosmio X775 series is ugly or flashy (like you said haha) but I actually like it. I love the backlight keyboard, and although I wish it was in black/red rather than silver/red (or just an all around different color than red, like green or blue) I still think it’s a unique looking laptop!

Ryland answers:

I went to a friends house so I could play a copy of Civ on a 7 year old Toshiba Satellite A75, just to see what it felt like. His old out dated Toshiba Satellite A75 felt great.  It is a great laptop for it’s time.

To answer your questions:

Yes, Toshiba makes great laptops.
Yes, the Toshiba Qosmio, which is their flagship line, is a great model series.
Yes, the video chipset (NVidia 560m) is great for gaming.
Yes, the processor will perform well.

Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop

It is a great laptop. You will enjoy it. Granted, it is a little flashy in how it looks, but if you like that… Then it’s all good.

Thomas asks…

Engineering Programs – Sony VAIO vs. Toshiba Satellite/Qosmio?

I will be running engineering programs such as CAD and Solidworks. What computer would better fit my needs? A Sony VPCEG190X with a Core i5, 1GB NVIDIA, 6GB DDR3, 500GB at 5400RPM HD, $1020. A Toshiba Satellite A665-S5183X with a Core i7, 1GB NVIDIA, 6GB DDR3, 500GB at 5400RPM HD, $1000. Or a Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7270 with a Core i5, 1.5GB NVIDIA, 6GB DDR3, 640GB at 7200RPM HD, $1200. Thanks for your help!

Ryland answers:

I will strongly recommend you Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7272 as it is more durable and reliable as compared to Sony Vaio. This best for for all kind of stuff. You can check this out at  http://laptop-for-gaming.com/toshiba-qosmio-x775-q7272/

Right now I’m leaning towards either the MSI or Asus. I was just wondering which would handle high end games the best (Witcher 2, Skyrim, COD, WoW, SWTOR, Dead Island, RIFT, & etc.). I also heard the ASUS comes with a free case and wireless mouse and that the TOSHIBA has only about a 2 hr lifespan. I also hear the ASUS and TOSHIBA have awesome cooling units. I am not at all computer savvy when it comes to picking out gaming rigs but I don’t want a gaming desktop because I would like to be able to carry the laptop around with me. Or if anyone knows of a different laptop in those price ranges that would be great too (I looked at alienware and it feels like I’m just paying for a toy that lights up on the outside with nothing on the inside for that enormous price tag). I tried using google to find my answers but couldn’t seem to find anything that would compare them and the view sites I did threw the answers back and forth, one says it’s good another says it’s bad. Even youtube videos of people putting the machines to a test would be the same way, one time it’s good the other time it’s bad. So could just use the advice of a laptop guru.

Ryland answers:

Toshiba laptop is out of competition because of MSi (processor wouldnt matter much as gaming requires graphics, and Core i7 2nd gen is more than enough for processor part). I don’t know for what is Asus charging so much for! That 3GB of graphic memory would be useless unless you do gaming on three HD monitors on Nvidia surround, else even 1GB is enough for one 1080p screen. MSi has got a faster GPU, which matters a lot in gaming, so I would recommend MSi, it gives best value for money. Do not forget to inquire about the manufacturer’s customer service quality, as it is very important, and some manufacturers have poor service ( I don’t know about MSi, ask your dealer)

Donna asks…

Are BIOS updates safe to install?

I realize this may sound stupid since I don’t think they would put something out to screw up your computer, but just be on the safe side ….

Are the BIOS updates from the Toshiba Service Station safe to download and initiate?

I just received notice of a BIOS update, version 1.30, for Qosmio X770/X775 and am a little leery about having it download and install.

Should I go a head and do it or wait to see if others have any problems with it first?

Thanks.

Ryland answers:

This is my rule for bios update especially on a laptop. If ain’t broken, don’t try to fix it.
